Apartment Living with a House Full of “Stuff”

I love where we live. It doesn’t have the same character or charm our TINY (540 sq ft) apartment in downtown had- but it is a pretty good size (just about 1100 sq ft) and it has two bedrooms which we need between the big kids and my art stuff. It is great to have a nice place to live- even when it is smallish. The problem gets to be when there is a house-full of stuff. Everyone knows you fill the space you have! :)

That second room has had about 5 transformations since we moved in! (First it was an office for Guy and I with a futon/couch for the kids to spend weekends/nights, then it was The Boy’s room when he lived here, then for a while it was kind of a mess room- Guy brought all his books and bookshelves from his ex-wives house and we put them in there too, then it was a true spare room, then it got kind of messy- then we put all my art stuff in there… it was looking good!) Art Room

I was pretty happy with the way things looked in there. Then as we do sometimes- we realized that with this new set-up and organizing the shelves etc.- we could actually make better use of other spaces in the house… (and honestly? I realized that I have more stuff to put on the art shelves- but it was all stored in the living room- but really it should be in the art room too, shouldn’t it?! LOL)

So I went to Ikea and with the help of my intrepid friend C- got two more big bookshelves. We made it fit!!!We made it fit!!!

While I was visiting family back in NY- my lovely husband put the bookshelves together so all we had to do when I got home was put them all in the right place- and set them up!

We moved the one from the office (yes the one I had JUST put all together in the art room) into the living room and threw away the old tore up white one that I brought with me 6 years ago when I moved to MN… Then we moved one of the new ones into the art room and the other into the bedroom. (Moving the small shelf from the bedroom into the art room.) Crazy!

So today I have the living room shelves and the bedroom shelves all organized and purty… but that darn art room/ office… that is going to be another story! Check it out… How does this happen??How does this happen?

LOL Why is it that the minute a room gets a little “out of sorts…” it becomes the dumping ground for everything! Why is there a pile of sheets in there?? LOL

I am excited though- I love that we have organized and gotten rid of things and that everything has a place (WILL have a place!)- a NECESSITY in a smallish place.

How do you manage your space? Do you go through organizing periods? Do you re-do rooms all the time?
